NWA/WCW Big Event Project #5: 1st Annual Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tournament

-4/19/86

-From The Superdome in New Orleans, LA

-There is no commentary on this video.

-This is two shows held the same day, one in the afternoon, and then another that night.

-Match 1 First Round Tournament Match: Hangman Bobby Jaggers & Mean Mike Miller VS Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood

-Match is cut to Wahoo & McDaniel chopping the shit out of their opponents. One of them looks like Bobby Dempsey. Wahoo chops down the dark-haired one and pins him while sticking his dick in the guy's face.

-Match 2 First Round Tournament Match: Nelson Royal & Sam Houston VS The Batten Twins

-The Batten Twins look like Byers from The Lone Gunmen. The Twins control what is shown until one of them misses a charge in the corner. Nifty finish as Royal whips one of them into the ropes, and Houston jumps in with a bulldog for the pin.

-Match 3 First Round Tournament Match: Jimmy Valiant & Manny Fernandez VS Baron Von Raschke & The Barbarian

-Barbarian looks really different here. The heels try to double-team Valiant until Fernandez catches Barbarian with a sunset flip for the pin. Raschke looked drunk.

-Match 4 First Round Tournament Match: Terry Taylor & Dr. Death Steve Williams VS Bill Dundee & Buddy Landell

-Taylor gets worked over until he makes the hot tag to Dr. Death, who quickly finishes Landell with two shoulder tackles and a running powerslam.

-Match 5 First Round Tournament Match: The New Zealand Sheepherders (a.k.a. The Bushwhackers) VS Hector and Chavo Guerrero

-Weird seeing Luke & Butch do their offense, but as heels and getting no reaction other than mocking “hey”s. No heat until the finish, so naturally, it's the longest match so far. The Sheepherders get a double-team on Hector, and Luke gets the pin.

-Match 6 First Round Tournament Match: The Fantastics VS The Fabulous Ones

-If you've ever wanted to see Bobby Fulton's ass, this match is for you. Spiffy finish as Steve Keirn backdrops Rogers (who flips out of it to land on his feet), and is immediately rolled up by Fulton for the pin.

-Match 7 First Round Tournament Match: Koko B. Ware & The Italian Stallion VS Buzz Sawyer & Rick Steiner

-Or Coco Ware & The Italian Stallion VS Buzz Sawyer & Rick Stiner, if you're whomever designed the pre-match graphic. Sawyer literally dives through the ropes off a Koko dropkick. Rick looks odd in generic black trunks and sans the headgear. Sawyer misses a top rope splash, but takes the bump by landing on his feet and falling forward. Stallion tries...something, but gets caught in mid-aid and power slammed by Sawyer for the pin. The fifteen minute announcement came right before the finish, so I am assuming it's a good thing this was trimmed to about one minute.

-Match 8 First Round Tournament Match: Brett Sawyer & David Peterson VS Black Bart & Jimmy Garvin

-The babyfaces work in some high flying offense with a flying head-scissors and a leg drop from the top onto Bart's arm. Bart avoids a dropkick from Peterson, and Garvin finishes him off with...and Impaler DDT?! Not sure if that is what he was going for, but that is what it ended up being.

-Match 9 Second Round Tournament Match: The Midnight Express VS Sam Houston & Nelson Royal

-Condrey almost kills Houston with a clothesline. Royal gets Condrey into the dreaded Abdominal Stretch, but Eaton comes off the top and nails him, allowing Condrey to get the pin.

-Match 10 Second Round Tournament Match: Magnum T.A. & Ronny Garvin VS Buzz Sawyer & Rick Steiner

-Not much here. Garvin bitch-slaps Rick, and Magnum pins Rick soon after with a belly-to-belly suplex.

-Match 11 Second Round Tournament Match: The Road Warriors VS Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood

-Lots of love for the Warriors here. Hawk casually avoids a flying Youngblood, then almost kills him with a flying clothesline for the pin. Wahoo gets in the ring like he's going to break it up, but then just stands there staring at Animal as his partner is pinned.

-Match 12 Second Round Tournament Match: Ivan & Nikita Koloff VS Jimmy Valiant & Manny Fernandez

-Good heat for this. Match breaks down and as the ref is sending Manny out of the ring, Nikita catches Valiant with a sloppy clothesline, allowing Ivan to get the pin.

-Match 13 Second Round Tournament Match: Rick Martel & Dino Bravo VS Terry Taylor & Steve Williams

-A younger and much thinner Bruce Pritchard announces that Dino has been hospitalized with appendicitis, and so Taylor & Williams advance by forfeit.

-Match 14 Second Round Tournament Match: The Rock N' Roll Express VS The New Zealand Sheepherders

-OK, what is show of this should be good. What little is shown has a good, frantic pace. Morton steals the New Zealand flag and nails Butch in the melee, drawing a DQ.

-Match 15 Second Round Tournament Match: Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard VS The Fantastics

-Arn responds to a series of dropkicks from Fulton by rolling to the outside and yelling “shit!”. Arn spikes Fulton with a gourd buster, but Rogers makes the save. Seconds later, Arn tries to slam Fulton, but Rogers dropkicks Fulton's back, and Fulton falls on top of Arn for the upset victory.

-Match 16 Second Round Tournament Match: Giant Baba & Tiger Mask VS Black Bart & Jimmy Garvin

-Baba looks to me like a shorter, Japanese version of The Great Khali, and the crowd is not sure how to react to him. Baba pins Bart after kicking him in the chest, and Garvin does not try to save his partner, so the “one save” rule must still be in effect.

-Match 17 Tournament Quarter-Finals: The Road Warriors VS The Midnight Express

-The Warriors are in control until Cornette takes his life into his own hands and smacks Animal on the back of his head with the tennis racket for the DQ.

-Match 18 Tournament Quarter-Finals: Ivan & Nikita Koloff VS Terry Taylor & Steve Williams

-Ivan complains about Taylor pulling his trunks...and the ref actually doesn't take his word for it. Dr. Death's responding to Nikita's taunting by drop kicking him in the stomach is pretty funny. The announcer starts counting down the minutes, forecasting the ending. The Koloffs are in a mad dash to finish off the injured Taylor before the time limit, but can't, with Nikita hitting a big clothesline and getting the cover just moments after the bell. The whole Russian stable demolish the faces after the bell.

-Match 19 Tournament Quarter-Finals: The New Zealand Sheepherders VS The Fantastics

-Fantastics control early, and celebrate with a high five. The Sheepherders take wacky bumps off dropkicks. Fulton gets posted on the outside, drawing the first blood of the day. Rogers bites Luke, and he bleeds too, I guess to make up for the lack of blood from the previous matches. Match breaks down into a chaotic brawl (because really, what else are Luke & Butch going to do?), and it ends in a double-DQ.

-Match 20 Tournament Quarter-Finals: Magnum T.A. & Ron Garvin VS Giant Baba & Tiger Mask

-Baba almost pins Magnum, and I think a riot might have broken out if he had. Crowd is not interested in the Japanese team at all it seems. Tiger Mask tries a dive off the top, but Magnum catches him with a belly-to-belly suplex for the pin, in a spot that looks a lot better on paper than it was in execution.

-Match 21 UWF North American Heavyweight Championship: Jim Duggan VS Dick Slater

-Jim Ross does the ring announcing. Duggan is over big. A bunch of punching, kicking, and stomping. Slater shoves Earl Hebner down, and ends up eating a three-point-stance clothesline as a result, and Duggan retains.

-Match 22 NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Ric Flair [c] VS Dusty Rhodes

-Dusty has Baby Doll with him, so this is after she's left Tully. Flair is sporting the Big Gold. Flair's manipulation of Tommy Young (“WATCH THE TIGHTS DAMN IT!”) is beautiful. The two appear to have their regular match, and of course, both bleed. Dusty, of course, bleeds worse than he did at Starrcade '84. Dusty punctuates the 10 punch spot with a bionic elbow. I like the way Dusty steps into the Figure 4 when he locks it on. Both guys are very vocal, or at least it's more noticeable without the commentary. Dusty gets a visual fall after a ref bump. Flair nails Dusty with Dusty's own boot for a two count. Baby Doll protests, so Flair, ever the gentleman, goes after her. Dusty nails Flair with the boot, drawing a DQ.

-Match 23 Crockett Cup Finals: Magnum T.A. & Ron Garvin VS The Road Warriors

-Tony Schiavone does the ring introductions. Crowd is behind the Roadies. Seems like an OK match. Animal uses his team's save when Magnum catches Hawk with the belly-to-belly. Garvin KO's Hawk with the Hands of Stone, but hurts himself. Animal switches with Hawk without a tag, and nails Garvin with a clothesline for the pin, which the ref counts for some reason.

-Damn, even drastically edited, this tournament DRAGS badly. I started out thinking that if this was released a two shows, I could do them separately, but I was completely wiped out about half-way through. The draws in the quarter-finals (thus no semi-finals) provide only a small amount of relief.
